Using carpets for flooring can really make
a huge difference in interior design. But it can also bring you as much hassle.
Maintaining and cleaning a carpet may require a lot more work than other usual
flooring options.
One of the biggest problems for those who
have carpeted floors is water damage. Those who experience flooding or some
plumbing problems can totally relate to it. Not only that. Even just a heavy
downpour can cause water damage to your carpet if you left a door or a window
open.
Water damage can really do a lot of harm on
your carpet. Aside from the discoloration, you would also have to face the
problem with molds, odor, and the list goes on. So it is really important to be
able to address the issue as soon as possible.
If not, you might have to replace the whole thing. How? The following
are some tips:
1. Don’t panic. You will make the worst
decisions if you do. So just stay calm and think of the next steps that you
will take.
2. Identify the cause. If you don’t know
where the water is coming from then you should check to find out. Go to the
source and stop it from flooding some more. Then also consider the type of
water that soaked your area. If it’s from sewage or other dirty sources you
have to disinfect it immediately. Otherwise, your carpet might be beyond
saving.
3. Remove all excess water. Grab some
buckets and dippers or any other tools which can help you rain out all the
water. It would be impossible to deal with your carpet while it is still submerged
in the water.
4. Cleanse the area. Mix a few tablespoons
of bleach with gallons of water. Apply it over your entire carpet and let it
sit for a few minutes. This will help disinfect the entire area.
5. Dry the area. Use industrial fans and
other similar things to dry out the whole area. You will need about 36 hours
until the carpet gets really dry. If it doesn’t dry up, then consider replacing
your carpet already. It only takes 12 hours for harmful things such as molds to
develop in your wet carpet.
If you just stay calm and follow these
tips, you will be able to salvage your water damaged carpet. if you’re too
scared to risk it, you can always call some professionals to do the job for
you.
