How to Deal with Water Damage in Carpets



Using carpets for flooring can really make a huge difference in interior design. But it can also bring you as much hassle. Maintaining and cleaning a carpet may require a lot more work than other usual flooring options.
One of the biggest problems for those who have carpeted floors is water damage. Those who experience flooding or some plumbing problems can totally relate to it. Not only that. Even just a heavy downpour can cause water damage to your carpet if you left a door or a window open.
Water damage can really do a lot of harm on your carpet. Aside from the discoloration, you would also have to face the problem with molds, odor, and the list goes on. So it is really important to be able to address the issue as soon as possible.  If not, you might have to replace the whole thing. How? The following are some tips:
1. Don’t panic. You will make the worst decisions if you do. So just stay calm and think of the next steps that you will take.
2. Identify the cause. If you don’t know where the water is coming from then you should check to find out. Go to the source and stop it from flooding some more. Then also consider the type of water that soaked your area. If it’s from sewage or other dirty sources you have to disinfect it immediately. Otherwise, your carpet might be beyond saving.
3. Remove all excess water. Grab some buckets and dippers or any other tools which can help you rain out all the water. It would be impossible to deal with your carpet while it is still submerged in the water.
4. Cleanse the area. Mix a few tablespoons of bleach with gallons of water. Apply it over your entire carpet and let it sit for a few minutes. This will help disinfect the entire area.
5. Dry the area. Use industrial fans and other similar things to dry out the whole area. You will need about 36 hours until the carpet gets really dry. If it doesn’t dry up, then consider replacing your carpet already. It only takes 12 hours for harmful things such as molds to develop in your wet carpet.
