Obvious and Not So Obvious Carpet Care Tips

If you have carpet in your home you are probably already aware of what type of an investment it is. It didn’t come cheap and the last thing you want to do is have to replace it before it is absolutely necessary.

The simple solution is to maintain your carpet on a regular basis. It really is that simple. Keep your carpet maintained and it will last you many, many years.

So what is involved with maintaining carpet? There are a few basics that hold true for all types of carpet. You should always consult the care manual for your particular type of carpet before attempting anything complex. But for standard care these few details apply to any type of carpet.

The first thing is to keep your carpet clean. Thank you Captain Obvious. The thing is, everybody knows this. But not everybody does it. Keeping your carpet clean is as easy as vacuuming it once to twice a week. If you can do it daily, then more power to you. But most of us live in the real world and vacuuming everyday just isn’t going to happen.

Another little tip is to take your shoes off whenever you walk on the carpet. But don’t go barefoot. Wearing socks or soft house slippers will keep the natural oils from the bottom of your feet from getting pushed into your carpet. These oils can attract dirt and grime. You should also utilize mats in front of your entrances. People just seem to instinctually wipe their feet on them before coming into your house.

If you have pets or children, or if you just happen to be accident prone, then you’ve probably had to clean up a spill or two. The key to spills and pet accidents is to address them as soon as you possibly can. The faster you can clean them up the better chance you have of eliminating them completely. Extract, apply cleaner, blot, rinse, and repeat.

Once we arrange our furniture we tend to forget about it. That’s where that goes and that’s that. But it is a good idea to rearrange your furniture from time to time. We’ve all seen the divots left behind by chair legs or the indentions from heavy furniture. These will damage the fibers over time. If you’re not ready for a full remodel, you can always move each item just a little bit. Just enough to let the indented fibers regain their shape.
Remember to hire a professional carpet cleaner at least once a year. Having an expert give your carpet a thorough cleaning basically sets it back to square one each year. From there all you need to do is remember to follow through with your routine maintenance.
