Area rugs are one of the best tools to elevate your home’s
décor and stylishness. They offer amazing colors, textures, and patterns to
illuminate your home and lift the spirits of your visitors.
Imagine having a warm and cozy area to spend quality time
with your friends and family.
Area rugs help to transform your home into a place of
relaxation and comfort by providing warm, cozy areas for slumber parties,
watching television, or just chatting with your favorite relatives.
Area rugs come with many great benefits, but keeping them
looking and smelling great is crucial. No one wants a rug that will only last a
few weeks. With proper maintenance, you can have your rugs for many years to
come!
Below, I’ve provided some tips on how you can keep your area
rugs in the best condition possible. Have fun!
1. Prepare the Rug. Preparing the rug for
cleaning requires that you vacuum both sides of the rug to remove all dirt,
dust, and debris.
2. Test for Color Fading or Running. Some
rug shampoo can cause color fades or runs on your rug. Therefore, it’s
important to carefully read the directions on the rug shampoo. Alternatively,
you may create your own rug shampoo by combining warm water and dish detergent.
Using hot water may shrink the
fibers of the rug and may even dwindle the colors. Test the solution on a small
section of the rug; preferably a slightly visible section.
If the colors start to fade or run
after trying the solution, stop! If there’s no fading or running, then move to
the next step.
3. Create a foam of soap with a soft sponge
and work it into the rug. Try to get the soap as deep as possible into the
rug to reach any dirt that may be hiding deep down.
4. Allow the mixture to sit and absorb into
the rug, grind it in for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly with a hose. Ensure
that no soapy water is seen running from the rug after rinsing. The presence of
soap indicates that the rug is not rinsed properly.
5. Wring rug to remove excess water. If a
lot of water is still absorbed into the rug, it may take a very long while to
dry. Squeezing out the excess can help to quicken the drying process. However,
you must ensure that you don’t wring it opposite to the how the fibers are
formed.
6. Place the rug flat on a clean surface and
let it dry. Rotate the rug after one side has dried. Do this until the rug
is entirely dry. Next, use a soft brush to unravel the rug’s fibers that may
have flattened during washing and drying.
